The teachers knew Rock Your School Day was coming, but the kids were in for a surprise! This time, we did a camping theme for an entire week! Some of my students had never been camping before, so I wanted to expose them to some of the concepts before our special day! We completed camping craft activities throughout the week, so our hallway was ready for a camping adventure!
Camping Door Decoration
It's simple and it's sweet: Camp Begindergarten!
We also added some clouds to streamers and popped them in the doorway.
Camping Classroom Transformation
The thing about classroom transformations is that you just don't know how it's going to come together until the last minute. I started planning for this camping theme at the beginning of the school year and continued to add to it until the morning of Rock Your School Day. It came together in the end, and it ended up being my most favorite classroom transformation to date!
Starry night backdrops, made of butcher paper, were added to the windows and the front of my desk. A tent and some trees were added to our classroom house, along with some Christmas lights. Tables were moved to a circle formation and topped with plastic table covers and sheets. The fire was just paper taped to bendy straws to help support it to stand up. I taped the straws to the floor. Green grass was placed in front of each campsite area, which was made of butcher paper. Bear, frog, and flower cutouts, made with an Ellison machine, were also sprinkled on the grass. Each student started the day with a camping hat craft for morning work, followed by a camping coloring sheet. They. Were. Thrilled!
A fire was streaming on the board with a beautiful crackling sound! We did this at Christmastime on pajama day, so the kids were pumped to see it return! To find a fireplace stream, search youtube! To begin our activities, the class sat around the fire. We told a class campfire story, where I started the story, and then passed a ladybug around the circle for kids to add to it! It was adorable!
Here's a closeup of their morning work activities. The hat is included in our camping writing pack (below); I just made extra copies to turn into hats!
This is how the teacher felt when the kiddos arrived at their campsite! It was so rewarding to see their excitement after lots of prep!
Students were invited to bring a blanket to school for our camping theme, not something that was completely out of the ordinary for celebrating our favorite theme weeks. Students wrapped themselves in their blankets and stood in front of the tent for their Rock Your School Day photo.
Throughout the week, we talked about different things we might do on a camping trip. We completed this sheet after reading S Is for S'Mores by Patricia Pierce.
We added our personalized campers to the top of the sheet! The kids always love it when we replace heads of crafts with their own little faces!
Camping Theme Activities for Kindergarten
On our Camping Rock Your School Day, we completed the camping activities we drew about earlier in the week! We went on a hike with our Nature Scavenger Hunt sheet from Live.Laugh.Speech! We went outside as a class chanting, "We're going on a bear hunt! We're going to catch a big one! With big green eyes! And a fuzzy little tail! Look over there!" Then I'd say, "(Student) sees....!" The student would call out what s/he saw, and we'd all mark it off of the list!
S'mores Craft and Writing Prompt
We also talked about s'mores! Students wrote a list of ingredients needed to make them, and they creeated their own s'more crafts!
Fishing activity for Kindergarten Literacy
We went fishing in our classroom pond! When students caught letters, they said the sounds and things that started with the letters! They did an amazing job with this activity!!
