It's time to celebrate all things Autumn with our kindergarten lessons! We begin by creating Fall centers! Spider rings are always a hit for counting in our math centers. We also enjoy creating felt jack-o-lantern faces as we work on shape recognition. Sorting a variety of nuts is a fun sorting activity in our science center!
We hit up Bullseye's Playground, the Dollar Spot at Target, every season! It is always stocked at Halloween, and we have to get our hands on ALLLL of the mini erasers to spruce up our kindergarten fine motor activities! Those big eyes are on the back of my teacher chair to remind students to keep their EYES on the speaker. I just love all of the random magic that can be created with just a few dollars!
The month of October also means fire safety month! Miss Mingo is my FAVORITE title for teaching about fire safety at school. You can never go wrong with the Gingerbread Man series, and this time, he is loose on the fire truck! We can't ever pass up a Pete the Cat book, either!
I like to send home a fire escape plan for homework prior to fire safety week. I find that this really helps students to ease fears about fires in their homes prior to our discussions. This homework pack is perfect for this activity! The homework gets attached to the back of the fire engine craft!
life cycle of a pumpkin
The pumpkin life cycle is a highlight of our Fall explorations! The Pumpkin Circle is the perfect non-fiction title to read, and Pumpkin Jack is wonderful fictional companion. Of course, we love Spookley the Square Pumpkin, The Biggest Pumpkin Ever, and The Runaway Pumpkin, too!
We love this AdOrAbLe craft for creating each element of the pumpkin life cycle! Students glue, the seed, sprout, green pumpkin, and create big orange jack-o-lanterns! This craft correlates so well with Pumpkin Jack, as we discuss how the faces of our pumpkins will wilt and turn into mush.
Our favorite little Halloween finger play is Five Little Pumpkins Sitting On a Gate! I love it for teaching ordinal numbers in kindergarten, too! Click the picture below to pick up this craft to go along with it! We use the teacher copy over and over again throughout the week as we sing. On Friday, the kids make their own to take home! They love to decorate the faces of each pumpkin!
fun math activities
Halloween math activity lessons are are sure to involve candy! Students have fun creating these candy corn masterpieces as they count and EAT!
tons of crafts
As we explore Fall, we also discuss other elements we see on the farm, along with those amazing pumpkins! We love to get down on the farm with our favorite titles, including the Click, Clack, Moo series! There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Cow, and Otis are among our top titles as well. Check out this super simple hen craft made with half of a paper plate! The kids just love taking pets home with them during farm week! We treat them extra special by having the chickens join us for the day, first though. Throughout the day, we feed them, hold them, and make sure they follow school rules.
We like to discuss scarecrows and their job of keeping crows away from the crops. I admit that I always have a hard time picking my favorite scarecrow craft.
AND FINALLY, here's a little scarecrow activity for you to do with your kiddos as you kick off the beautiful season of Fall!
If you'd like to explore and create with more of his friends, grab them in this GIANT BUNDLE!
If I'm being honest, October crafting is among my favorites, so we have a whooooool lot of options available! Explore our entire October collection! Happy Fall, friends!
