End of Year Activities

6/8/2021

When April arrives, it's time to start preparing for the end of the year.  It seems that once May hits, school days become filled with school-wide end of the year activities, and I just hate to rush the activities that capture what our year together was all about!

Principal's Day

Principal's Day is celebrated on May 1st of each year.  This year, we adapted one of our Mother's Day craft packs to best suit our fearless leader.  The kids all got a set of flowers to paint, and then they cut them out and signed their names on the backs of them.  I taped the flowers all together and typed up a little note to share our appreciation for our principal.  The kids were thrilled to share their special surprise with her!

Memory Books

I picked up these cute little books from Bullseye's Playground at Target.  The kids were so thrilled to be authors of their very first books!!

We completed one page each day.  I projected the sentence on the board.  We only wrote and drew on the right side of the book, so no pages had anything on the backs.

On the inside cover, they made their title pages.  For the pages that followed, they wrote the following sentence starters or sentences:
This is me.
I am ___.
This is my family.  (We had family pictures sent in for homework at the beginning of the school year, so we popped those in the books!  This was probably the most well-loved page.)
Picture
I like to eat ___.
This is my friend.
This makes my heart happy!
I like to ___.

Begindergarten Scrapbooks

Once our Memory Books were completed, we jazzed up the front cover with handprints and such.  Then I popped them into their Begindergarten scrapbooks, something I had been working on all throughout the year. I collected a few of their projects and writing samples from the year, and they had a blast looking back at them.

Since it’s something I put together all year, I admit that I forget the significance of those little books until the moment they’re placed in the kids’ hands. They squealed and giggled at how they wrote and drew at the beginning of the school year, and they reminisced as they looked at the pictures of our class family adventures. After they had looked at them, I read the cover page, and I barely made it. I didn’t even feel it coming on, but I got choked up with the words. The end of the year brings so many emotions. We’ve shared so many memories together, and each class always has a little piece in my heart.

Back to School Writing Samples Packet for the Kindergarten Year

$3.00

Record students’ knowledge of handwriting, letters, letter sounds, and drawing throughout the kindergarten year with this writing samples packet.  We start recording our writing in August, and we end our documentation in July.  In our classroom, I print the entire packet for each student as follows:

-one-sided

-3-hole punched

-corner staple

Directions for each month are listed in the packet.  Students copy words from the board and then from word banks to start the year.  In our classroom, students refer to thematic anchor charts for the word banks.  In the middle of the year, students write words as the teacher says them.  By the end of the year, students write on their own.

Tip: Each month, I flip the pages and place packets at each students’ area to avoid confusion.

Monthly Handprint Poem Pack for Kindergarten for the Whole Year (Back to School)

$6.00

This sweet little pack is filled with simple poems for the months of August through June. For each month, students are to paint their hands to make creations to match the poems. All poem sheets contain some clipart to make the creations even sweeter! Pages 18-28 are visuals for to you refer to each month.

This pack can be used in a few fun ways.

1) Prior to the start of the school year, bind packets of poems for each student. Create throughout the year, and give the packets to parents as super special end of the year gifts.

2) Every month, students create. Laminate the sheets, and send them home as a monthly keepsake.

Instructions for Painting

For handprints, I suggest for an adult to have paint prepared on a paper plate. Adult calls students to table one-by-one and paints each child’s hand. Remember to have a drying spot prepared.

For fingerprints, I suggest to have four paper plates prepared at a table. Adult calls groups of four students to table to paint. This allows for adult to keep a close eye on all of the painters.

August: Students paint hands black. Once the paint is dry, add heart stickers to palms. Note that this poem comes with three options, one for preschool, one for K, one for 1st.

September: Students paint fingertips red to put apples on trees.

October: Do not paint thumbs. Students paint the rest of their hands black. They print their hands twice, palms overlapping, to create spiders with eight legs. Once paint is dry, add wiggle eyes to bodies.

November: Students paint fingers (and not palms) to create feathers for turkeys. Use orange, red, yellow, and brown paint.

December: Students paint hands green. They print them upside-down on the page to create a tree. Put star stickers on tops. OR Students paint fingertips blue to put dots on the end of the large snowflake lines. They might also put additional snowflake dots around the page.

January: Do not paint thumbs. Students paint hands white or a very light blue. Once the paint is dry, students use permanent markers to draw a hat, face, carrot nose, arms, scarf.

February: Students paint both hands red. They print their hands upside-down on the page in the shape of a heart.

March: Students paint fingers (and not palms) to create a rainbow shooting out of the pot. Use red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple paint.

April: Students paint fingers and top of palm purple. They print them on the page above the umbrella handle to complete it.

May: Students paint fingers and top of palm green. They print them just above the flower pot. Once the paint dries, students draw simple flowers on each fingertip. (Note: There are two options, one with and without the word “Mom” so students might give the poem to any special person in May!)

June: Students paint hands yellow. As they rotate the page, they print their hands up to four times, palms overlapping, to create a sun. Once the paint has dried, add wiggle eyes to the suns, and draw mouths with a black permanent marker.

Homework for Kindergarten, Preschool: Thematic Family Activities (Back to School)

$3.50

In our classroom, we work to create a family-like environment that includes both our students and our students’ families.  I’ve created this resource so our students’ families can participate in our thematic learning along with us.  BONUS: Keeping the projects for students serves as great pieces for our Memory Books that I send home at the end of the year, too!

At the beginning of each month, I include these family projects with our newsletter.  Directions on each sheet ask for students and families to complete the activity by the end of the month.  When students bring the completed projects back to school, they place them in our Show and Share basket.  When time allows, we project the activities on the board, and students tell us about their assignments.  We display projects on our classroom door for the month.  At the end of the month, I put the projects in students’ memory books, which will be taken home at the end of the year.

Monthly Assignments:

August: (no projects, as I think it’s important for students and families to ease into new school routines)

September: My Favorite Things (and families are also asked to send in a family photo to hang in the classroom for the year)

October: Halloween Costume

November: Disguise the Turkey

December: All I Want for Christmas

January: Favorite Thing to Do In Winter

February: Something I Love

March: Favorite Thing to Do In Spring

April: When I Grow Up, Family Member’s Job

May: What I’m Looking Forward to In Summer

June: (No homework!  Enjoy playing outside together as a family!)

Begindergarten Graduation Books

Our favorite end of the year books for begindergarten include the following titles: Clifford's Graduation Day, The Night Before Summer Vacation, The Best Teacher Ever, Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the Last Day of Kindergarten, and Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come!
Picture

Graduation Craft and Drawing Prompt

After reading these books, on our graduation day, we complete our graduation craft packs!  Students color the little graduates to look like themselves.  Then we take a look back at the collection of classroom photos from the school year.  (There are usually close to 1,000, so we look at them throughout the course of the day!)  Then students complete a drawing activity where they draw (and write) about their favorite part of the year.  As you can see, most kiddos had a hard time choosing just one!

Here is a link to our differentiated graduate pack, along with another one I have used, in which students write and draw about what they want to be when they grow up!
