As we begin Earth Day activities in our kindergarten classroom, we discuss the vocabulary terms recycle, reduce, and reuse. We touch on some key concepts with this anchor chart.  The kids love these packs for connecting with our thematic anchor charts! We refer to our anchor chart over and over again when the key concepts are mentioned in the books. I love how students absorb information with simple visuals, available to them on the anchor chart throughout the Earth Day unit!  Earth Day Process Art for KindergartenI admit it's sometimes difficult for me to remember that art can be about the process and not the end product. In this case, the process also ties in with Earth Day, so it makes it a little easier for my brain. Throughout the year, we collect pieces of paper in our scrap tub instead of throwing it away. On Earth Day, I hand out a batch of colored paper for students to rip into small pieces. We discuss the concept that we are reusing something that could have been thrown away. Using their fine motor skills, they rip pieces of paper and place them into their recycling buckets. Now is when we talk about the concept of recycling and how products can be made into something new. We collect all ripped paper into a large bin and add water. Then each student chooses a cookie cutter, along with a paper towel and a paper plate. They push the wet paper into their cookie cutters. We let them set overnight to dry. The next day, I carefully remove the cutter, and students see their shredded paper has been made into something new!  Reusing Lesson for KindergartenAnother project we do during Earth week includes some large boxes, which are set aside by our cafeteria helpers. I arrange the boxes by taping them together, and I tell the students they get to reuse more materials (boxes and scrap paper) to make a classroom creation. We read Not a Box by Antoinette Portis. This book is perfect for getting their imaginations going! I tell them the boxes are not just ordinary boxes, but they are actually the body of a robot!  From there, students get to work. Again, they use their fine motor skills to rip paper, larger this time, to cover the box. I absolutely love the way they guide each other.  When the students are out of the classroom, I add a few more details to make the robot come to life. When they return, they are completely shocked to see what they have made! Bonus: I like to turn on youtube robot sounds randomly to really get the class going!  Earth Day Math Craft Activity for KindergartenI love to challenge myself to engage students across the curriculum with our weekly themes. During math class, students arrange cans in number order from one to ten with this recycling craft!  Earth Day Snack with Smokey the BearWe found Smokey the Bear online, and the kids were thrilled to get to make a snack to go with the book! Smashing Oreos was definitely a satisfying fine motor task the kids enjoyed, too! Who doesn't love dirt pudding?!
