Looking for outer space activities for your kindergarten lessons and center activities? I'm sharing an idea for an anchor chart for day and night and the phases of the moon for your sciences lessons. I'm also incorporate the space theme into a math lesson by adding with an alien spaceship craft. During our literacy center activities, kids are making name rocket crafts! Keep reading to get in on all of the fun with your class! Costumes, Decorations, and Learning ObjectivesWhat is Rock Your School Day? Teachers go all out for a theme to engage the students in their learning! It is a day that reminds us all why we come to school, both as educators and students. Teachers are there to teach, motivate, and inspire. Students are there to learn! Check out our outer space lessons from our space day! After reading about the solar system, we learned the order of the planets with the activity below. (Click the photo to access the download.) The books I'm holding in the top photo are my go-to favorites for teaching about space. I've used them every year! They're simple, yet they are jam-packed with facts. Kids really enjoy them, and they obtain a lot of information from the text and pictures! Rock Your School Days are always complete with the teachers dressing up and classroom decorations. For the outer space them, teachers dressed as aliens and astronauts. Our classroom decorations included starry night table runners (made of butcher paper) and a daytime sky on the windows. I typically try to find things around the house to bring in, and this little moon lamp from my son's bedroom was a fun addition to our out of this world theme! Our board serves as a great backdrop throughout the day as well! Areas of the classroom are decorated for different lessons. We use our classroom house as a focal point for our dramatic play learning. Students were excited to enter the rocket ship! The windows were a part of our Morning Meeting, where we discussed what we see in the sky during the day and various types of weather. The planets lined up on the front of my teacher table were included in our science lesson as we explored each one. Alien HatsKids love to dress up as much as the teachers do, of course! For each RYSD, I have hats prepared for morning work. Just add strips of paper to the back, and staple! My little aliens were so excited to FLY into our day! Phases of the Moon Books for KindergartenWe tie our favorite space books into our learning, including "There Was an Old Astronaut Who Swallowed the Moon", "Fly Guy Presents Space", "If You Decide to Go to the Moon", and "Happy Birthday, Moon". My son made this solar system diorama for his fifth grade science project. I was sure to scoop it up when he was finished with it! It serves as a great visual for my little ones! Outer Space Anchor ChartWe learn about the concepts of time of day and the phases of the moon with this anchor chart. I love visuals to help kiddos obtain concrete ideas about our topic of the week. Spaceship Addition Alien Math ActivityDuring math, we practice addition to 5 with this spaceship activity. Students color the lights to match their number sentences! Number PRactice with Moon SandHere's another engaging math activity for kindergarten kiddos! Play "Scoot" as students practice numbers! Shape Practice, Constellation styleAstronaut Craft and Drawing PromptOur writing lesson includes an outer space writing prompt where students write about what they see outside of the window of their space shuttle, and they create constellations using stickers! Upon completion, I glued students' faces inside the windows of the astronaut crafts. Rocket Name Craft for kindergarten Literacy CenterDuring literacy centers, students create name crafts with this rocket ship craft activity. I love that we can easily differentiate with this activity, writing first, middle, or last names, depending on the student! Robot ShapesIf you're looking for some shape practice in your outer space unit, this set is perfect for your students!
