It's time to celebrate all things Autumn with October kindergarten activities and lessons! Explore centers, fire safety, pumpkins, farming, Halloween, and more with ideas for math, science, and literacy OCtober CentersWe begin by creating Fall centers! Kids complete activities for morning work. Spider rings are always a hit for counting practice. We also enjoy creating felt jack-o-lantern faces as we work on shape recognition and visual-spatial skills. Sorting a variety of nuts is a fun sorting activity in our science center!  October Math Game: CountingOne October game the kiddos play in math includes some jack-o-lantern cups and spider rings. We play this game as we learn about numerals and one-to-one correspondence. Peek-A-Boo Count: Parter A puts 0-3 spiders under the cup while Partner B hides his/eyes. Partner A quickly picks up the cup and then places it back over the spiders. Partner B tells how many spiders s/he saw. Repeat. Count and Spill: Partner A reaches into a bag of 10 spiders to take out a small handful and place them in a cup. Partner B spills the cup of spiders onto the table to count. Repeat.  October Sensory BinOur sensory bin changes monthly; October is when the bin is introduced. This bin has witch's pots from Dollar Tree, Halloween objects from Walmart, letter blocks from Target, letters from a gas station reader board, and Fall words. Kids hunt for letters to build words. They also hunt for blocks to find the first letter in the words.  Lakeshore Letter TubsOctober is when we transition from our letter of the day exploration to our letter of the week study! I use this little sensory bin to place our Lakeshore Letter Tub pieces in. As we learn new letters, I place objects from up to three different tubs inside for the kids to sort. I introduce the new objects and vocabulary with the kids as a class. They reach into the mystery box to learn about what's inside! Materials inside of the bin change monthly; this one has black beans and spider rings!  Mini Eraser JackpotSide note: We hit up Bullseye's Playground, the Dollar Spot at Target, every season! It is always stocked at Halloween, and we have to get our hands on ALLLL of the mini erasers to spruce up our kindergarten fine motor activities! We use them for math every week! Those big eyes are on the back of my teacher chair to remind students to keep their EYES on the speaker. I just love all of the random magic that can be created with just a few dollars!  October Literacy ActivitiesMini Eraser Activity with letter formation practiceHere's just one way we use mini erasers! Kids made "monster pumpkins" with orange plastic plates and erasers! I love the simplicity of using imagination to make learning magical!  Go Away, Big Green Monster!For fine motor Friday on the week of the letter M, we painted our own MONSTERS and added MACARONI to the MOUTHS.   Letter Stew Beginning Sound ActivityKids pull a card out of the pumpkin bucket, and place it in the correct area to sort them. We chant, "(Student name) is making some letter stew! Whip, whip! Whip, whip!" each time a kiddo pulls out a card! Simple and sweet!  October ThemesLet's Get Batty!Take a peek at our bat anchor chart.
