Springtime in kindergarten means the introduction of animal life cycles. In today's post, we're learning about the life cycles of birds, ladybugs, butterflies, and frogs. We're sharing life cycle books for kindergarten, along with activity ideas for life cycles of even more plants and animals! Kindergarten LIfe CYcle BooksWe really love the Science Vocabulary Readers, Ladybug Life Cycle, Butterfly Life Cycle, and Frog Life Cycle. All three readers provide simple, informative descriptions of the life cycle of each animal. The illustrations are perfect for kindergarten! My Baby Blue Jays is a great book to teach about bird life cycles. John Berendt tells the story of a mama and papa bird building a nest on his balcony. He goes on to share the details of the eggs, hatchlings, and the baby birds hopping out into the world. It's a very relatable, engaging story for the kids! I also like to bring in stuffed animals or puppets whenever I can to connect to our themes. It's a great hook at the beginning of lessons! The kids know that if they do a great job listening and answering questions, they will get to pet the animals. For added fun, our featured creature always "gets" someone with a lick, a noise, etc. They go crazy, and it makes me laugh. Yes, I am easily entertained. Life Cycle Anchor Chart for KindergartenTo connect to our Fall life cycle lessons, I remind students of the sunflower life cycle on our interactive anchor chart. Each day of the week, we discuss another creature, and students are provided with a hands-on activity to show understanding of each life cycle. Interactive Life Cycle Crafts for KindergartenStudents create crafts during morning work, and during science, we discuss the life cycle sheets and glue pieces in order on the crafts. Life Cycle Picture Books for KindergartenDuring our reading block, we read life cycle picture books. At the beginning of the unit, we read, When I Was Little by Jamie Lee Curtis. This is the perfect book for students to make connections to their own life and growing up. We read Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? by Eric Carle, to make connections to babies and mamas. We discuss the names of each baby animal for vocabulary exploration, too. After learning about the life cycle of butterflies, The Very Impatient Caterpillar is a fun book to connect to throughout the week. Chickens Aren't the Only Ones is a super book to learn about a variety of animals who lay eggs. Since we're learning about eggs, we tie The Good Egg, by Jory John and Pete Oswald, into our guidance lessons. I just love it when a good theme comes together with books! NO Prep Activities for the Whole YearSince we study a variety of life cycles throughout the year, I created these life cycle packs to keep it consistent for the kiddos! It helps them to build a concrete understanding and connection among life cycles. The coloring pages are perfect for morning work or centers, and the NO Prep Crafts are ideal for science lessons!
