I'm sharing ways to introduce the story of the life of Martin Luther King Jr with kindergarten students. We read some wonderful titles to get our discussion going, including The Colors of Us and It's Okay To Be Different. After reading, we incorporate our craft and writing activity packs into our writing lessons during journal time. The Colors of Us ActivitiesFirst up, I read the book, “The Colors of Us” by Karen Katz, the kids energetically look around the room, searching for friends with the shades of skin that are referenced in the book. Shades include “chocolate brown, like cupcakes” and “coconuts and coffee toffee.” The kids are so excited to compare their own skin shades to something beautiful or delicious. In the next part of our discussion, they all put their hands together, and they compare their shades of skin. The kids are thrilled to see skin shades are different, shouting out, “Ooo, ___’s skin is like an Oreo!” “___’s skin is like milk!” They’ve never noticed it before! They are different. All of them. So what?! They are friends. It means nothing to them to see differences among themselves because they love the people who are inside the differences. ❣️ As our study moves forward, we also read It's Okay to Be Different by Todd Parr. This book is perfect for showing the many, many differences among people and how we live. When I make the connection to the students in our classroom and point out differences among peers, it’s always so surprising for them to see. Among our discussion, they sort each other based on eye colors and hair colors. They giggle at how they are alike and how they are different than their friends. They giggle because it’s something they have never noticed before. I love this craft pack to accompany Mr. Parr's book. Students can mix and match the character pieces in any way they'd like! All About Me, Celebrate Differences Craft & Writing (Back to School, MLK)
$4.00
This back to school season or as you study Martin Luther King Jr., discuss how people are alike and also compare to see differences. Talk about what makes everyone special and unique (skin, hair, eye color, for example). Celebrate being special individuals! As you discuss uniqueness, student (or teacher) writes what makes him/her special and draws a picture to go with the sentence. Before making copies of faces and hair pieces, allow students to choose what they’d like. Then copy pieces on a variety of colors. Glue writing to the frame (not included, as a standard piece of construction paper will frame the sheet), and create face, hair, and hands for a very sweet display.
