Email us at [email protected] We read our favorite Saint Patrick's Day books, "The Gingerbread Man and the Leprechaun Loose at School" and "The Night Before Saint Patrick's Day" so the kids understand the possibility of leprechauns sneaking around the school. Here are my favorite map materials, including Me On the Map and My Street. I like showing the kids pretend and real maps, along with a globe, too!  During math the day before Saint Patricks' Day, the kids sort “gold” from our math manipulative tubs to try to lure the leprechaun to our room. Over night, Leonard the Leprechaun sneaks in, leaving a mess of their yellow materials. He also leaves a note and a few footprints behind. (Oh, AND we mysteriously have green toilet water once he visits ...I guess you can draw your own conclusions....)  When the students find the mess, we create maps of our classroom to show where Leonard went in our room! The kids are completely engaged as we add labels and map details to show what happened! I love this hands-on opportunity for them to create their own examples of maps! They are encouraged to take the maps home to tell their family about what happened in our classroom, another opportunity to use the map!  Once the map has been made, we clean up the mess, which is the ultimate sorting challenge! It's fun to watch them work together to tackle this project! I have to admit, I, too, am fascinated by the smooth lines of this beautiful rainbow every year! All you need is a paper plate, a bit of hot water, and enough Skittles to place around the edge of the plate! Slowly pour the hot water in the middle of the plate until water touches each Skittle. Then sit back and watch the magic happen!  Skittles Sorting Math activityYou can't possibly get a bag of Skittles out without eating them! So we don't put them away just yet! Next up is our Skittles math activity! Students color sorting sheets to match the colors of the Skittles. Then I give each students a handful of Skittles to sort on their sorting sheets. They sort and write how many Skittles are in each color group.  Rainbow CraftThe kids absolutely love painting, so we connect our Skittles math and science activities with painting a rainbow! We discuss colors and mixing colors while making a beautiful rainbow bulletin board! "A Rainbow of My Own" and "What Makes a Rainbow?" are my two favorite rainbow titles!  We discuss our favorite colors with this writing and drawing prompt activity sheet. We prep for this project by painting our rainbows for the project above, along with the rectangles for this project. This works out perfectly because the kids never want to stop painting after just one sheet!  We use the rainbow from our NO PREP pack for this fine motor activity!
