Trying New Things, Open & Active Listening: Social Emotional Learning Activity
Practice being open, active listeners as you encourage students to try new things with this activity pack! These activities might be used over the course of a week, month, or entire school year to go back and revisit.
Start your activities by displaying a question mark (page 5 (color), 6 (black and white)). Discuss trying new things for the first time (ex. riding a bike, swimming without a float, eating sushi, riding an amusement park ride, etc.). Explain that it is great to try to new things to keep our minds and hearts open to new experiences and new people. Then ask students to share about something new they tried for the first time.
As students share, encourage active listening by asking students to also connect with what another peer shared, having them also tell something they would like to try.
Follow up with these discussions by having students share their thoughts on paper. Two drawing options (pages 7, 8) are included. Three writing options (pages 9-11) are included as well, along with a simple craft (page 12) to place on top of the writing sheets for display.
To continue your activities, you might hang posters (page 13) up in or on lockers. At sharing time, students share about something new they recently tried. It can be as simple as having a conversation with someone new or trying a new food in the cafeteria! Then they color an element of the poster, such as a cheek, an eye, and so on, to represent the accomplishment of trying new things!
Hang up the question mark poster (page 4) in your room as a reminder to reflect on being active listeners and trying new things.
Jabari Jumps, The Dot, Yoko, I Will Never Ever Eat a Tomato, and Chester’s Way, are great books to read to add to your lessons!
