Weather and Emotions / Feelings: Social Emotional Learning Concepts Activity
Use weather concepts to help students connect to their emotions and feelings. Ideas for connections might include worry wind, content partly cloudy, playful snow, angry storm, sad rain, happy sun. Once students develop more of an understanding of emotions and feelings, students might come up with their own descriptive words to connect to the cards, such as anxious, upset, silly, and so on. You might use the cards during your morning meeting to have students do a check-in. Once the concept is understood, you might have students keep a copy of the weather sheet in a school folder to use with you for a one-on-one check-in each day. Three options of weather reporting are included as well. You might use these sheets for the first week / month of exploring emotions together. Students document the day of the week, color a weather box, and draw / write about why they have the feelings they are having. This will support students in discovering emotions and feelings and being able to explain them as you continue to explore social emotional learning concepts throughout the school year.
