New Year Hat Craft, Shape Activity for Kindergarten Math Center / Station
Explore shapes and patterns this New Year as you create New Years hat crafts during math centers, a small-group, or a whole-group lesson in preschool or kindergarten. Start your lesson by allowing students to choose their shape hats. Encourage them to color patterns on the small shapes. You might break this down into three patterning lessons. For example, you might teach AB one day, ABB the next, and ABC the third.
Then students cut and glue the pieces of the printable craft. Staple the strips to the center shape piece. Then wrap the strips around the students’ heads for sizing, and staple the ends together. Note that for some students, you might have a few of the extra length pieces on hand in case students need it to be a bit longer.
Now you’re ready to discuss shapes together! You might have students sort themselves based on their hat shapes, such as shapes with and without curves, for example. Another idea is to sort by how many sides. Students might come up with their own ways to sort as well!
