It's Okay to Be Different Craft and Writing Activity Pack for Preschool and Kindergarten Kids

Innocence.  When I talk with little ones about differences among peers, it’s always so surprising for them to see. Among our discussion, they sort each other based on eye colors and hair colors. They giggle at how they are alike and how they are different than their friends. They giggle because it’s something they have never noticed before. 🥰
When I read the book, “The Colors of Us” by Karen Katz, the kids energetically look around the room, searching for friends with the shades of skin that are referenced in the book. Shades include “chocolate brown, like cupcakes” and “coconuts and coffee toffee.” The kids are so excited to compare their own skin shades to something beautiful or delicious. ☺️
In the next part of our discussion, they all put their hands together, and they compare their shades of skin. The kids are thrilled to see skin shades are different, shouting out, “Ooo, ___’s skin is like an Oreo!” “___’s skin is like milk!” They’ve never noticed it before! They are different. All of them. So what?! They are friends. It means nothing to them to see differences among themselves because they love the people who are inside of the differences. ❣️
To conclude our lesson, we compare two eggs, one brown and one white. I ask them if the eggs are different, and they notice the colors. Then I break the eggs. The kids see they are the same inside, just like themselves in comparison to their friends. All the same. Yet all different. 💕
Especially now, this is what our children need to be taught. They’re seeing bits of news and hearing parts of our conversations with other adults. Read to your kids. Inform them. Talk to them. Let them ask questions.  Let peace begin with you.   📚

There's More!!

We recommend “The Colors of Us” as noted above, along with the following titles: “The Peace Book” and “It’s Okay to Be Different” by Todd Parr. “Sheila Rae the Brave” is a sweet children’s book to introduce the concept of bravery; you might follow up by sharing Dr. Martin Luther King’s story.  Of course, in Krazy for Kindyland fashion, there’s a craft for that. Allllllll of that. Crafts for each topic are included in our Martin Luther King Jr. Craft Bundle, DISCOUNTED 50% for a limited time:
