Those big yellow buses are about to make their way to houses all around the neighborhood! That means it's time for us to start talking about bus safety with our kiddos! With every theme, I challenge myself to tie in educational activities across the curriculum! Today, I'm sharing just how I tied in bus safety with some shape activities during our math lessons! Teaching School Bus RulesTo get started, we move chairs to our carpet area, creating an aisle down the middle. We pretend to enter and exit the bus. I am the driver, and I pretend to open the door, waving students in. We discuss the main rules for the bus: 1) Walk in the aisles. 2) Sit in your seat. 3) Keep your body out of the aisles. 4) Be quiet at railroad crossings I like to review bus safety rules in the classroom, too. It is important for kids to know there's communication and expectations from their drivers and teachers. This sets the stage for the year, especially if there's communication of areas of bus safety that need improvement. For some fine motor practice, students color, cut, and glue these little bus projects! I have NO Prep craft packs for every theme. Just print and GO! Each craft is on one page, and there are little examples of each craft in the corner. I love the simplicity of getting this activity together! Requests? Email us at [email protected] Math With Dotter Paints and DiceWhat do you call these paints? Bingo dotters? Dauber paints? I’ve always called them dotter paints. 🤪 Anyway, the kids are super stoked whenever these little babies make an appearance! 💃🏻 Of course, you can simply dot them. It’s a great fine motor practice. But! We love to add simple activities in with our dotting process! 🎨 Here are a few ideas: -Roll a die and paint that many dots until it’s filled. -With a partner, take turns rolling a die and painting one sheet with two paints. The last one to dot is the winner. You must roll the exact number of dots left to win. -With a parter, choose to paint 1 or 2. The last one to dot loses the game. -Write numbers on the dots, 1-6. Roll a die. Paint the dot until you’ve dotted them all. Note that I have created this Back to School set, along with sets for every theme throughout the year! They are even bundled in an Endless, Growing Bundle for you to have forevvvvvver! Dot all of the things HERE! Kindergarten shape WorksheetsSo here are some examples of how I tie our theme into math. Our goal of the week is shape recognition. When it's time for our math activity lesson, we incorporate our bus theme by teaching shapes and creating some arts and crafts. At the beginning of the year, most students are comfortable tracing shapes with the first sheet shown below. We use markers to trace a parallelogram, rectangle, square, triangle, and rhombus. I copy the drawing sheet on the back. Once students have had a chance to practice on the front of the sheet, they try their best to draw shapes on their own on the back. This gives me a baseline for a shape drawing assessment in August, too. Once we have had some practice drawing shapes, I introduce the bus craft and review the 2D shapes again. Students use their fine motor skills to create cute little buses! Upon completion, students glue their buses to the tops of the shape worksheets, displaying the side of the worksheet of their choice. Below shows you how simple this craft pack is to prep. You could always print on white for students to color as well. This makes a fun back to school bulletin board display in the hallway! All of our educational craft packs are sold both individually and in discounted bundles! Shape SortingStudents are also provided with opportunities to sort shapes during math centers. This provides more fine motor fun, along with digging in to analyze the sides and corners on shapes. I love using these Target paint trays for sorting! Craft Packs for Every ThemeThis is just one small example of how I tie curriculum into our theme. We have craft packs for EVERY theme, including shapes, name practice, number order, addition and MORE! I love the MaGiC that hands-on activities bring to our classroom, and I hope you do, too!
