In November, our themes include a Fall recap along with the Election, Veterans Day, and World Kindness Day.  Wrapped up in all of this fun is a tribute to turkeys!  The kids love learning all about animals and where they live, what they eat, and what they do.  Weekly thematic anchor charts are a must in kindergarten, as we refer to them throughout our daily discussions.  The kids rely on them for writing, too!  This turkey anchor chart is our go-to for turkey time!

Turkey Books for Kindergarten

Some of our favorite read alouds about Thanksgiving include 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey, Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey by Lucille Colandro and How to Catch a Turkey by Adam Wallace. We love how silly these stories are; they make us giggle so much! 

​In math, we create turkey shape crafts.  There's a counting sheet that goes along with it, and the kids are so engaged throughout our turkey math lesson!

Here's another turkey shape craft for math!  The kids love creating their very own pets to take home!

Turkey Shape Craft, Counting Activity for Thanksgiving, Fall, Farm Math Center

As you implement Thanksgiving lessons and teach students about turkeys, students practice fine motor and visual-spatial skills with this shape turkey craft activity!  Students might create the turkey during morning work, center time, indoor recess, or for fast finisher work! Note that preschool, kindergarten, and first grade students enjoy both coloring and painting our crafts, which feature thick lines.  Three options, plus a coloring option, are included to best meet the needs of your little learners! You might also attach the craft to a stuffed paper bag. The kids LOVE making "pets" to take home!

During your math lesson, students choose a shape on their turkeys to count.  Then the student or teacher writes the number on the short line, along with the shape word on the long line.  Example: “I see 6 circles looking at me.

Thanksgiving Writing Lesson for Kindergarten

For writing, we write a simple sentence about either a turkey or a scarecrow. I like to let the kids choose how to end their sentence based on their interests. Some kids write more details but most stick to one sentence at this point in the year. Then, they add a detailed picture so we can display their wonderful work in the hallway!

Thanksgiving Turkey Snack for Kids

I love, love, love giving kids the tools to make something and saying, “Go!” I also love showing them an end result of what I had in mind. Then I remind them that no one is wrong, but everyone has unique ideas that make their creations special. They’re all so proud of what they create, and some make adjustments to their projects, while others leave them as is. I love to see how unique the kids are in their thought processes, too!
