Season changes in kindergarten mean a lot of learning is about to happen in our science lessons! We begin by learning about the signs of Spring. Spring BooksWe read When will it be Spring? by Catherine Walters and Spring Is Here by Will Hillenbrand. These two books are GREAT books for following up with hibernation lessons, and are perfect to use for a compare and contrast activity!  Exploring signs of SpringWe create a signs of Spring anchor chart based on what the little bear, Alfie, from When will it be Spring? sees in his story. We also add our own ideas. There is a tree just outside of our classroom, lovingly referred to as the "begindergarten tree". We observe it throughout the year. In Spring, we observe the buds on our tree!  These packs are perfect for exploring signs of Spring! I have a few different options for you to best meet the needs of you little learners and the time blocks you have planned. We will complete the NO PREP craft pack during morning work; the coloring pages will be available for science center options. Each of the lessons from the Activity Pack will be completed during our math and writing blocks.

I LOVE to use Marion Dane Bauer's Rain book to teach about the water cycle. After we read the book, I demonstrate the water cycle using a cotton ball, water, and a little bucket. We discuss evaporation as the students use their hands to throw rays of heat at my bucket. Then I soak the cotton ball until the water droplets get so heavy that it rains. I squeeze the cotton ball, and the water cycle continues.  After I demonstrate the water cycle, the kiddos get to do their own hands-on activity with cotton balls, too! Simple, sweet, and effective!  We also fill a bag with water and hang it on the window. We observe it throughout the week, as condensation forms inside.  To make sure the students have a concrete understanding of the water cycle, they create with this water cycle craft activity.  Wind Lesson for KindergartenYou can't teach about Spring weather without the concept of wind! What's the perfect way to demonstrate the effects of wind? Flying kites of course! The kids GO WILD for this activity! Be sure to use liquid glue for this project so pieces don't fall off as you take your kites outside for some Springtime fun!  First Day of Spring Hat CraftWhen the official first day of Spring arrives, students create Spring hats for morning work!
