Rock Your School Day is a fun day to join thousands of educators from around the world as you ROCK YOUR SCHOOL! The movement encourages educators to join in the movement to create an outside-the-box experience for students and staff. Themes can vary, but the captivation is key! We chose to capture our students attention this year with a construction themed day! This was their welcome to the construction zone! We borrowed traffic cones from the county to line the hallways and printed plenty of construction signs for the walls. Now Entering our ClassroomYep, you guessed it! Our classroom was decked out with even more construction tape, cones and signs! Starting our dayOnce students settled into the classroom, they got another surprise. A local excavating company gifted them each their own construction helmet to wear on our special day! Kids completed a construction coloring page to start the day! Construction Theme Food and SnacksOur cafeteria staff went completely above and beyond to make the kids' day special! The day wouldn't be complete without a toolkit lunchbox and tasty treats; the kids really liked taking home their own toolbox at the end of the day. Students BUILT thier own ice cream sundaes in the cafeteria to celebrate and take a little break from the days work! This was definitely my favorite part of the day! Check out this staff lunch! What a fun surprise from our cafeteria staff! Our principal made a cookie delivery, too! COnstruction Crew VisitorsWe even got a visit from some local construction workers. The kids enjoyed checking out the machines and equipment and see how helpful our community helpers can be. Construction writing and literacyDuring writing time, we wrote about what we would build if we were construction workers and completed a simple craft to go with it. The kids worked so hard on these. I just LOVE this hallway display! This craft pack is available for download, and multiple writing prompt choices are included. Construction Book and LIteracy Activity for KindergartenOur fun read aloud for the day was Little Excavator by Anna Dewdney! It was such an adorable story to read on this special day. She is the same author that writes the Llama Llama books! My kids love her ! After reading, I passed a little clump of "dirt" to each student. When they were opened, little clumps of "dirt" (Whoppers) were inside, along with a letter! Once students found their matching uppercase/lowercase letters, they ate their treats. Then we made CVC words with the letters and wrote them on dry-erase boards. Stem activitiesFor some fun STEM activities, we "played" in the dirt. We matched objects to letters written on brown paper and build structures or words out of marshmallows and toothpicks! We also guessed which material would build the tallest structure and then tried out our hypotheses! Some kids were surprised to see that they were right! We had such an amazing day and can't wait to celebrate our next Rock Your School Day adventure! Community Helper ActivitiesLooking for downloads for your community helper theme?
